Daniel Suelo Moves to Cave, Lives Without Money

daniel suelo caveWhile most people are trying to make as much money as possible, one Utah man has sworn off money for good.

Daniel Suelo, 48, has lived on zero dollars a day for most of the past decade, according to Details magazine . He lives in a cave about an hour walk from Moab, Utah, where he often goes to the public library to maintain Daniel Suelo blog for free .

On the blog he writes that he doesn’t take or use money, foodstamps, or any other kind of government assistance.

In the fall of 2000, Suelo, who graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in anthropology in 1987, decided to stop using money. He has held many jobs, made plenty of money and had several credit cards over the years, but he says something was missing in his life when he used money.

“Money represents lack. Money represents things in the past (debt) and things in the future (credit), but money never represents what is present,” Suelo writes.

He lives off the land, scouring the forest and river bank for food and gathering discarded items from the town. He says he’s never gone without a meal and has only gotten sick once in the past three years.

A woman in Germany who started an exchange circle, where people without money trade objects and favors, says she’s lived without money for 12 years .
