RIP Corazon Aquino

Former Philippine President Corazon “Cory” Aquino, who restored democracy in the Philippines in the peaceful 1986 People Power Revolution, passed away this morning at 3: 18 a.m. at age 76.

Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who is in the US, has declared a week of mourning for Aquino.

Filipinos all over the world had been praying and showing their support for Aquino, who has been confined in the hospital for more than a month, battling colon cancer. This support was also extended online, including adding a yellow ribbon to their Twitter avatar. With the news of her death, Corazon Aquino is now one of the top Trending Topics on Twitter.

Filipinos have also been been posting prayers at this site for Aquino.

Corazon C. Aquino of the Philippines, who was swept into office on a wave of “people power” in 1986 and then faced down a half dozen coup attempts in six years as president, died Saturday. She was 76.

Her son, Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, said his mother died at 3:18 a.m., The Associated Press reported. She learned she had advanced colon cancer last year and had been hospitalized in Manila for more than a month, he said. The cancer, he added, had spread to other organs, and she was too weak to continue chemotherapy.

RIP, Cory Aquino. We will forever be grateful to you for restoring democracy in the Philippines.
