Student Stabbed to Death in Florida

Coral Gables High School was locked down, and students were forced to remain in classrooms after the authorities were alerted to the stabbing.
The body of the victim could be seen covered by a white sheet in images captured by local television news stations flying helicopters over Coral Gables, an affluent suburb of Miami.
“We have had the worst kind of tragedy take place,” said School Superintendent Alberto Carvalho.
More than 100 parents converged outside the gates of the school wanting to take their children home. The school later allowed parents to enter and escort students out.
Several parents said they had been in touch with their children by cellphone and text message shortly after the stabbing. Neyma Barrero said her 14-year-old son Sergio called to say he was all right.
Another parent who declined to be identified said her daughter called and said that she had witnessed the incident and that the two boys were arguing over a girl.
Ms. Barrero and other parents outside the school said security measures at Coral Gables High School were inadequate, considering the recent historyof school-related violence in South Florida.
In 2004, a 14-year-old boy stabbed and killed his best friend at a South Florida middle school and was later convicted of first-degree murder. More recently, there have been a handful of shootings and stabbing at area schools, though no one was killed.
Students at Coral Gables High are not required to pass through a metal detector, according to school officials, who said students are occasionally checked for weapons.
