Who is Gwen Araujo ?

Gwen Araujo was a transgendered teenager. A group of four men murdered Gwen Araujo in 2002, after they discovered that she possessed male genitalia.Her full name was Gwen Amber Rose Araujo. She was born on February 24, 1985. Her former name was Edward Araujo, Jr. She used to live in Newark, California. She was died on October 4, 2002.

She was engaged sexually with two of the murderers. A forced inspection by one of the guests revealed Araujo to possess male genitalia, at a party held on October 3, 2002. After that, a group of four men named Michael Magidson, Jaron Nabors, Jose Merel and Jason Cazares attacked her with a frying pan and a barbell, beaten her to death. After that she was taken to a remote area in the Sierra Nevada foothills and buried by them in a shallow grave.

During trial, Jaron Nabors, one of the defendants provided information to the police on the killing in return for a manslaughter plea. Michael Magidson and Jose Merel was convicted of second degree murder by the jury and Jason Cazares of voluntary manslaughter. The killing was not considered a hate crime by the jury. After the jury failed to convict the defendants, protests were made across the country.

On Gwen Araujo, a film was made in 2006, “A Girl Like Me: The Gwen Araujo Story”. This film was premiered on the Lifetime Network network.Gwen was played by actress J.D. Pardo and her mother’s role as Sylvia Guerrero was played by actress Mercedes Ruehl.
