Veterans Day 2009 event scheduled

Veterans Day is commemorated annually on the 11th month, the 11th day, at the 11th hour, which was the moment that World War I ended. Originally called Armistice Day, the national holiday was later changed to Veterans Day, to honor U.S. veterans of all wars. Freedom has always been worth fighting for, in service to our country, and Veterans Day is the one day of the year when the proud men and women who serve are recognized for their contribution to all Americans.

This year’s event at beautiful Fort Custer National Cemetery, hosted by the all-volunteer Fort Custer National Cemetery Advisory Committee, will be truly memorable. Starting with a fly-over by the Michigan Air National Guard’s 110th Fighter Squadron, attendees will enjoy hearing the By Chance Gospel Group do a selection of patriotic music throughout the one-hour event and Linda Carter Thomas will sing the Battle Hymn of the Republic.

There will be one distinguished military speaker, Battle Creek’s Col. Roger Seidel, MI ANG, commander of the 110 Fighter Wing. Also veterans groups and elected officials will be in attendance.

Advisory committee volunteers will serve cookies, punch, hot coffee and cocoa. The good news for this year’s Veterans Day commemoration is that the weather is predicted to be clear, with a temperature in the mid-50s, which means the crowd should exceed last year’s estimated 1,500. Veterans and their families, and all area residents both young and old, are invited to attend this spectacular, free event.

Fort Custer National Cemetery is located at 155011 Dickman Road, Augusta. Refreshments will be served beginning at 10:30 a.m. and the program will begin promptly at 11 a.m. A special dedication of two memorial plaques will be done at 10:30 a.m. If you have any questions, please call Sherry D. Swann, program chair, at 964-0309.
